DEAD ARE COMING...

Dead Island: The HK Virus

DESCRIPTION:

This video explains, in disturbing detail, the virus that sparked the Zombie outbreak on Banoi - the fictional island in video game, Dead Island. I am blown away by just how much effort the developers of the game put into crafting a believable Zombie apocalypse (on a small scale), with several different Zombie types, not only looking convincing but behaving in different ways too, doing what you would expect them to do based on their outside descriptions. The virus that created all these types was actually based on the merger of two real world viruses - "Kuru" and "HIV" - which gave the game a grounding in fact but also left enough room for people to theorise about how the different types of Zombies formed; from the bog-standard Walkers, the usual slow stumbling ghouls, to the enigmatic Butchers with their gnawed-off bony 'hands' and devastating speed. And, more than that, this video offers a nostalgic look back at Dead Island (it is almost 10 years old now); a true trend-setter of a game that is often overlooked as Zombie games become increasingly more frequent. Now-a-days the so-called 'special infected' in their four basic types (brute, exploder, screamer and spitter) are ten-a-penny but back in 2011, this was all new. Dead Island, and moreover it's developer, Techland, was one of the first game development companies to take Zombies - and just Zombies - seriously, priming the gates for a host of other games to follow. It is such a shame that the sequel has found itself in such a mess - possibly, never to see the light of day.
