What, on Earth, happened to Dead Rising? MSN It's time to take a nostalgic look back at Capcom's other Zombie franchise, Dead Rising. After the original game, an Xbox-360 exclusive back in 2006, there have been 3 sequels, a myriad of DLC, 2 comics, 3 movies (one of them an episodic nightmare for Xbox Live Marketplace) and even a PC remaster. Still, now-a-days the growing franchise has disappeared from existence, which, in my view, is a terrible shame. What happened? What went so badly wrong to make this media-spanning phenomenon to sink into obscurity? This external article from MSN spills the proverbial beans. 03/09/2023
Mistakes that doom survivors in Zombie media SCREAM Horror Magazine There are many tropes in Zombie movies - things all protagonists do in those fictional apocalyptic situations to survive. Many of these are infeasible such as driving a monster truck after the world is overrun with walking corpses (I'm looking at you, Zombieland 2) or charging about with hand-to-hand combat weapons in situations where a single drop of Zombie blood is enough to infect you. This article identifies some of these fallacies in the hopes that, should the dead ever rise for real, you do not fall into the same traps. 26/03/2023
Dehumanization Zombie Research Society This external article from the boffins over at Zombie Research Society explains the idea of dehumanization - a very powerful tool when dealing with a Zombie outbreak, making it so much easier to 'handle' other living humans who have become the moaning undead. However, it can also be a very deadly weapon if not wielded properly; the act of considering things - previously loving, caring, compassionate things - as 'less than human', can lead down a very dark path indeed. 06/11/2022
The rise of Zombies in TV Bloody Disgusting This wonderful external article by the guys over at Bloody Disgusting chronicles the history of Zombies in television - lovingly dubbed "Z-TV". Zombies got off to a great start in movies, popping up everywhere since George A. Romero, way back in 1968, completely revamped the Zombie into the modern horrors we know today (fun fact: Romero was not trying to create a Zombie movie with Night of the Living Dead, his ghouls were "flesh-eaters" and technically not Zombies). However, when it comes to TV, the lovable deadheads struggled to find their footing. It was not until relatively recently with Charlie Brooker's Dead Set and the infamous The Walking Dead, both post-2000 shows, that Zombies in TV exploded into glorious unlife. 17/10/2021
What is happening with Road of the Dead? Bloody Disgusting In this lengthy external article from Bloody Disgusting, director Matt Birman spills the undead beans on the long-lost Road of the Dead movie; mentioning why it has taken so long to develop, if the public will ever get to see it and why, if it ever does begin filming, it may not be an official continuation of George A. Romero's legendary of the Dead timeline anymore. 08/11/2020
Coronavirus and how it could change Zombie media forever Bloody Disgusting This article discusses how the current global pandemic of coronavirus could completely change Zombie media in the future, focusing particularly on Zombie video games. It's an interesting read that comments on why we find the total collapse of civilization through seeming impossible Zombie viruses so frightening; because they seem real, they seem almost believable - a fear only heightened by the world's current situation. 20/09/2020
Are Zombies more Active at Night? Zombie Research Society This external article asks the question "Are Zombies more active at night?". It's actually an interesting point and one I had not even considered before (or, if I had, previously dismissing the concept flippantly by stating that Zombies are not Vampires). It is quite a topical point too with many games - 7 Days to Die, Dying Light - and some movies - I am Legend (if that can even be considered a Zombie movie) - showing that Zombies are more aggressive and move faster, with more agility, in the dark period. While the article does hint that this may be "learnt" behaviour, possibly even some hardcoded instinct written upon re-animation, it does conclude that such nocturnal activity is more likely due to a specific trait of the virus, curse or spell that created the Zombies in the first place. 24/05/2020
An interview with the producers of Zombie Army 4 Bloody Disgusting A very interesting interview with Head of Creative at Rebellion, Tim Jones, following the release of Zombie Army 4: Dead War. The interview talks about the inspirations behind Zombie Army 4, the rise of horror multiplayer games, the chances of Rebellion's classic games being remade and, finally, Rebellion's plans for the future. 16/02/2020
Film producers on why Resident Evil 2 is so scary PCGamesN This external article from PCGamesN offers a interesting, yet limited, look at how the fantastic Resident Evil 2 remake took inspiration from horror cinema for its greatest scares. It is obvious that the original Resident Evil titles drew heavily from George A. Romero's early masterworks such as Night of the Living Dead; isolation and being trapped, with a few other survivors, in a besieged location being the major theme. The remake however, takes it further by giving the player complete control of where they 'look' in the environment and drawing the player in with fiendish, time-sensitive puzzles. 12/05/2019
What is going on with Dead Island 2? gamesradar+ This article is an exhaustive investigation into what has become of Dead Island 2 including the recent speculation that it may have been moved onto yet another developer. I say exhaustive but what I really mean is as exhaustive as possible given the extremely scant nature of any concrete information out there. 10/02/2019
Zombie Apocalypse Survival Tips MightyGoods This article from MightyGoods takes a slightly tongue-in-cheek look at the Zombie apocalypse and, with the help of 6 survivalists, offers some advice on how to survive the hungry-dead monsters out there. There are some questionable answers - being lucky enough to scavenge a lightsabre is a dubious tactic to pin your hopes of survival on - but there are some very admirable strategies too, the worldly information given by Magda Knight being a particular highlight. 08/04/2018
Can World War Z 2 resurrect the Zombie film? Movie Pilot Zombie films are fairly 'hit-or-miss', to put it mildly, but with David Fincher, masterful director of Se7en, directing World War Z 2, the Zombie genre could be about to come back from the dead - in a big way. Whatever you thought about the first World War Z movie it did do phenomenally well in the box office, so it's fair to say that the sequel is highly anticipated. This magnificent article explains just how the film could play out as well as examining just why the original World War Z book spawned such admiration. 16/07/2017
How to stay gaming in the post-apocalypse PC Gamer We all love computer games - don't try to deny it. The virtual worlds they create are mind-blowing, theatres of near limitless potential providing blissful escapism from the crude, harsh reality of the real. However, when the dead rise and the world falls, will the true horror, not be the flesh-hungry ghouls, not the desperation of meagre survival, but that of a life without our beloved games - an absence of electronic wizardry to divert our minds from the agonising pitfalls outside? If yes, fear not; a salvation, of sorts, lies within this hurriedly researched yet factually accurate article from Christopher Livingston at PC Gamer. Read his tome-like words and you will learn that, while difficult, maintaining a functional gaming PC beyond the demise of civilization is not impossible - even having advantages which exceed virtual escapism. 02/10/2016
The Birth of Survival Horror PC Gamer This amazing article from PC Gamer, looks back at the original Resident Evil - the game that sparked my interest in Zombies and would mark the beginning of, what would become, a world-changing franchise. It's difficult to believe that 2016 heralds the 20th Anniversary but reassuring to know that, thanks to two spectacular remakes, people are still playing - and being terrified by - this fantastic game; one that very nearly never saw the light of day. 10/04/2016
How a Zombie Outbreak Could Happen io9 This blood-curdling article from io9 asks the question; could a Zombie Apocalypse actually happen. Starting with the assumption that, yes, Zombies are possible - true, walking (or running) undead Zombies - and considers ways these deceased nightmares could actually exist. Some things are dismissed right away; governmental conspiracy, interference from space, mind-control drugs, etc. The "norm" of a mysterious dead-reanimating virus is also ruled out leaving the spotlight on a dreaded fungal infection. 06/03/2016
George Romero's Resident Evil Bloody Disgusting This impressive article from the people over at Bloody Disgusting, takes a look back at what could have been with George Romero being at the helm of the Resident Evil movie. This would have been very, very cool if it indeed had come to pass - George Romero is the 'Godfather of the Dead' after all and he clearly has the talent, his live-action commercial for Resident Evil 2 (contained within this article) is mesmerizing. However, I adore the Paul Anderson films we currently have and, considering that the series has spanned two whole trilogies under his guidance, at lot of other people do as well. So, with the sixth Resident Evil film being Paul's last (or so he says), why don't we let Romero reboot the franchise - I would love to see a more true, toned-down and horrific adaption of the classic video game series? 08/11/2015
Humanising the Undead Bloody Disgusting In this well-written article from Bloody Disgusting, the writer poses the question of whether flesh-eating, murderous Zombies of old classics like Night of the Living Dead and even modern TV series - The Walking Dead - are being replaced by the loveable Zombified humans from Warm Bodies and American TV show iZombie. It's an interesting question that I have hinted at before in my article about the Nightmare City remake, funded through Indiegogo. The de-horrifying of Zombies, also bares remarkable resemblance to the fate that befell Vampires, going from crazed, feral demons into secretive and seductive, fake humans - a slightly-alarming fact mentioned in some of the comments. 24/05/2015
Should I build a bunker? ZRT: Zombie Response Team Many of us blindly assume that having an underground bunker full of weapons and survival resources, ready to run to and hide in when the Zombie Apocalypse occurs is a necessity. It seems true; Zombies lack the intelligence to invade such a fortress and, with enough food and water, a person could live in relative safety for weeks. This article gives someone's personal account of just how close they came to setting up a functional bunker should disaster strike. The idea is awesome, a fully-stocked survival shelter being a sight to behold but the logistics of the task cannot be overlooked. 28/12/2014
There are Zombies among us The Telegraph This article from The Telegraph explains the disturbing theory that, for a number of people, behaviour-controlling parasites could have infected their brain, removing their freewill. It is not radically 'out-of-the-box' thinking either as there are many examples of such parasites in the natural world - a few are described within. The article then concludes by giving evidence of how a simple cold can temporarily alter our behaviour - terrifyingly making us infect as many others as possible. 28/09/2014
Zombies Vs. Animals: The living dead wouldn't stand a chance boingboing This well-thought through article is a sort of spin off from the Walking Dead mythology created by Robert Kirkman. David Mizejewski, naturalist and media personality with the National Wildlife Federation, poses the apt question of just how an outbreak of these slow-moving yet deadly Zombies would fair against North American wildlife. The answer; not very well at all. There is a serious side note to this fantastical story however. While wildlife would surely make mincemeat of dead humans, the conflict with the living is a different story - one that sees wildlife in worrying decline. 13/07/2014
CDC Public Health Matters Blog: Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse CDC The official CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) publication about how to prepare for, and ultimately survive, a Zombie apocalypse. It is a success story for all Zombie fanatics out there to read about a government agency taking the Zombie threat seriously, even if it is the offspring of a 'tongue-in-cheek' campaign. After all, as we know, it is not a question of if Zombies lurch forth from beyond the grave, but when... 02/02/2014
World War Z 2: Five scenes we need to see Virgin Media Blogs A second World War Z movie was confirmed almost as soon as the first was released. This article lists five scenes Virgin Media think deserve a place in the sequel. 08/11/2013
