DEAD ARE COMING...

2022: Preview of the Dead: Part 3 - Others

Hail villainous cretins and welcome to the blood-curdling third part of the 2022 preview article series. In this cursed entry, we'll be taking a vengeful look at the hideous Others; the TV shows, the books and anything else I usually cover. A new trend is forming this year, and you'll see from the list below, that Zombies are making their way into the TV industry in increasing number.

I'm sure even the most braindead of ghouls know the rules by now but, here's a reminder:

  1. If a book, TV series or whatever was scheduled for release in 2021 but, for some ungodly reason, got delayed, it'll wind up in the special MIA section.
  2. Should a devilish morsel have been on last year's list, in the MIA section, if there has been no more news, the item is knocked out - it will not be included in this year's list.

The new stuff

The Walking Dead - Season 11 - Part 2

The TV show that started it all comes to a close

© FilmBook

The final ever season of The Walking Dead continues on February 11th and concludes this year. So far, season 11 has covered the early stages of our band of survivors' encounters with the Commonwealth; a congregation of communities that has developed advanced equipment and that numbers over fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements. While the TV show, once so popular, has been steadily losing viewers (though still boasts a fanbase other shows can only dream of), the epic conclusion of the series which cemented the first decaying footfalls of Zombiism in the world of TV is a historic event. In fact, I believe the sole reason for the recent boom in numbers of Zombie TV shows is down to this much-loved, eleven season show coming to an end.

Fear the Walking Dead - Season 7 - Part 2

The fallout continues...

© RadioTimes.com

The spin-off show to The Walking Dead is still going strong and shows no signs of stopping. The second group of episodes making up the 7th season will begin on April the 17th. For those not in the loop; "[season 7] follows Morgan's group scattered across the landscape of Texas as they try to survive the nuclear fallout brought about by Teddy (John Glover) and his followers. Meanwhile, Morgan Jones and Victor Strand clash over their philosophies.". It has also been announced that Madison Clark (played by Kim Dickens), assumed to have died during the events of season 4 - will return to the franchise.

Fear the Walking Dead - Season 8

What'll happen in season 8? Who knows.

© Bloody Disgusting

Practically nothing is known about Fear the Walking Dead season 8 other than an ultra-vague acknowledgement that it will premiere this year.

Tales of the Walking Dead

One-off, standalone stories in The Walking Dead universe is an intriguing concept

© RadioTimes.com

Yes, The Walking Dead is getting yet another spin-off this year - this one does sound intriguing though. Instead of focusing on an individual bands journey of survival, Tales will, in each of its six-episodes, tell the isolated story of an individual or group of individuals during a particular scenario, anywhere in the world and at anytime during the apocalypse. Some of the characters will be brand new to the franchise, others may be old favourites we have seen before. Recently, it was announced that Terry Crews has joined the cast list - that's got to be worth something, right?

All Of Us Are Dead

Zombies have overrun the school!

© NME

Korean film and TV has been taking off massively over the last few years with Train to Busan and Squid Game. In January this year, they launched a new Zombie-centric TV show titled All Of Us Are Dead. The 12-episode show follows a group of students, trapped inside a school overrun with braindead monsters, battling to stay alive until help arrives. The show has already reached the top spot in the Netflix viewer charts so it looks like this one will be another hit for Korea.

The Last of Us

After months of waiting, it may finally be released this year

© NME

Based on the hit PlayStation game The Last of Us, this is a very highly-anticipated TV series. The story follows the game 100%; Joel must take Ellie, a teenager who is the only one known to be immune the fungal Zombie-virus, across post-apocalyptic America in the hopes of finding a cure. There are big names attached to this project including the writer of Chernobyl and Game of Thrones actor's Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie respectively. At the time of writing, it has not been confirmed this show will release in 2022 but it has been in production for a while now so it would seem a safe bet.

Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas

The dead get animated

© WION

Serving as a spin-off TV show to Zack Snyder's Netflix-exclusive, epic Zombie movie, Army of the Dead, this animated series sees Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) and his rescue team confront the source of the Zombie outbreak while protecting what they love. It will be a prequel to the film. There will be six-episodes but still no confirmation of a release date.

Black Summer - Season 3

A third season of Black Summer is likely but unconfirmed so far

© Best of Netflix

I am reluctantly putting this one on the list because, even though the end of season 2 did highly suggest a third season was coming, it has not yet been announced by Netflix. There are also rumours that, while it may be coming, the third season may be pushed back into 2023. Whatever the state of this Zombie survival story from the makers of Z Nation, it's future is uncertain.

The Dead Times

Dead will rise...

© Vancouver is Awesome

That's right boils and ghouls, I officially confirm that The Dead Times is continuing into 2022. Some things to look forward to are the review of Zombie book Crawlerz (it's a really good novel by the way), the article Zombie or Not? where I examine popular figures from games and movies to conclude whether they are in fact Zombies and review of Resident Evil reboot film, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Resident Evil Tyrant T-002 Statue

The ultimate lifeform

© JustGeek

I know I don't usually cover things like this but as a special treat, and because it is so damn cool-looking, I'll give it a brief mention. This is not actually a figure of a Zombie (I'm cheating again) but it is from a Zombie game; Resident Evil. Any diehard fan of the RE franchise should eagerly await the release of this exquisite sculpture of the "ultimate lifeform" in August.

MIA

Resident Evil

Evil returns, but not in the way you want it

© trinikid

This is a bit of a strange entry in that it seems to only be loosely tied to the events of the mega-hit media-spanning Resident Evil franchise. There will be two timelines in the series; the first seeing two new characters to the franchise, Albert Wesker's never-before-mentioned teenage daughters, discovering alarming evidence that their father is working on something sinister. The second timeline jumps over a decade into the future, after the deadly T-virus has wiped out nearly all life on Earth, where the two sisters, now grown-up, struggle to survive in this world, full of Zombies and other monstrosities. No release date information has surfaced and with a generally poor fan reaction to the split-timeline synopsis, I would not be surprised if Netflix push the series back into 2023 for a new direction.

Kingdom - Season 3

Will this series ever happen?

© The Nation Roar

Strangely, it appears that Netflix have not officially announced the continuation of the Kingdom series nor have they revealed news of its cancellation. It was a hugely popular Zombie TV show and with the recent surge of Korean programming, I would have expected an announcement by now. Still, this year might see the return of the Zombie survival story set in 16th century Korea.
