THE DEAD TIMES

DEAD ARE COMING...

2023: Preview of the Dead: Part 1 - Movies

2022 has slithered back to the dark, damp dungeon of eternal time from where it spawned, to be slowly digested by whatever horrors dwell within, beyond the understanding of man, being recycled, renewed and regurgitated as a brand new year for later times. For now, 2023 is upon us, breaking down the fortresses of reality, twisting and shaping the macabre world of dread into its own image. The exact detail of that amazing spectacle remains hidden, obscured, but glimpses can be seen through the haze, lights in the dark. Some of these 'lights' are movies - pieces of cinematic history in the making or simple, visual, audible narratives of little import, but, and there is a very large and unmissable disappointment in this new time period; there are so few new Zombie movies on the horizon that there is little merit in even listing them here. I will however. The glorious undead wish it to be done and having heard their eerie call, I would be a fool not to answer.

There exists an abode of terror known as the MIA section. In its unfathomable depths lies any movie that was meant to be released from the Kraken-like jaws of doom in 2022 but, for whatever reason, failed to meet its mark. Should a movie project have languished in this hellish pit for a year (meaning it was in last year's MIA section) and there has been no further news, it is struck from the record, never to be mentioned again (unless it comes back from the dead of course, as things are known to do, from time to time).

The new stuff

Zombie Traveler

Um...

Yes, in truly, upsettingly awful news the only new Zombie movie being released in 2023 that we did not already know about is the unapologetically independent movie Zombie Traveler. Its synopsis is painfully brief; a woman, who kills Zombies, travels through time and space to save the man she loves. That's it, that's the entire plot of the movie.

Night of the Living Dead II

Is this movie even a real thing?

I'm really not sure what is going on with this movie - the last official update I can find on the Internet comes from 2021. To be honest, I was always a bit sceptical of this one and was sure it could only use the Night of the Living Dead name thanks to the failed attempts to copyright George Romero's original film. Still, production seemed well underway with segments of the movie having clearly been shot. Will we see it in 2023? I'm still sceptical - even more so now following the extreme lack of updates - but, it's possible.

Planet of the Dead

Radio silence on this one

I'm sure this sequel to Netflix-exclusive Army of the Dead is ticking away quietly in a bunker somewhere - the original being such a big-budget success for the streaming platform. However, there has been little, if any, news on the development of a sequel since 2021; strange for such a big production. There is still no confirmation on a story or who will be in the movie - the last thing heard was that Planet of the Dead is in the very early stages of production.

The Last Train to New York

This delayed train may have been cancelled

The Last Train to New York is the title chosen for the English-language remake of 2016's infamous Korean Zombie movie, Train to Busan. Everything was going swimmingly; the film was given an all-American title, an awesome poster was made and a confirmed release date was set - April 21st 2023. Then, in July last year, the train got de-railed as Warner Brothers (the company distributing the film), pulled it from their release schedule. The fact that it was yanked from its previous date, with no new date being put in its place, and the fact that there is literally no information about the movie other than it is a remake of the Korean movie suggests that this potentially great film is dead in the water.
